Diablo 4’s Warlock Pets Can Apparently Stand Around While You Die

Diablo 4’s Warlock can summon creatures from Hell to fight alongside them.

At least, that appears to be the job description.

Players are reporting that some Warlock pets can follow their master into battle, stand beside attacking enemies and contribute absolutely nothing while the player handles the entire fight alone.

The demon is present.

The demon is watching.

The demon has apparently joined middle management.

Abodian Can Refuse To Engage Enemies

A player describing the problem says Abodian frequently stands around without attacking.

The pet may follow the Warlock normally between encounters but fail to recognise nearby enemies once combat begins.

This can happen even when monsters are directly attacking the player.

Instead of engaging, Abodian remains close by and watches the health bar become somebody else’s problem.

The player can continue moving and using abilities normally.

The summoned demon simply does not perform the combat role expected from it.

Pet Builds Depend On Reliable AI

This is more than a cosmetic annoyance for players building around summoned creatures.

A pet-focused Warlock sacrifices other damage options to strengthen companions.

Equipment, skills and passive bonuses may all be selected around the assumption that the demon will consistently attack nearby targets.

When the pet becomes inactive, part of the build effectively disappears.

The character still pays the opportunity cost.

The demon stops providing the opportunity.

The Problem Feels Familiar To Minion Players

Necromancer players have complained about inconsistent minion targeting since Diablo 4 launched.

Summons can ignore priority targets, attack unimportant enemies or become confused by terrain and encounter mechanics.

Warlock pets now appear capable of joining that tradition.

Companion builds are fun because they allow the player to command a small supernatural army.

They become less impressive when the army requires individual motivational meetings before every pack.

The Cause Is Not Yet Clear

The report does not identify one reliable trigger.

The behaviour could involve enemy targeting, distance from the Warlock, terrain, recent movement or a pet state failing to update when combat starts.

It may also affect only particular demons or specific Warlock setups.

More reports and video examples will be needed before the exact conditions are known.

For now, players should treat the issue as a reported pet-AI problem rather than proof that every Warlock summon is universally broken.

Resummoning May Temporarily Reset The Pet

When a companion becomes inactive, the most obvious workaround is to dismiss or resummon it.

Leaving the immediate area, changing zones or restarting the game may also reset the pet’s behaviour.

These are general troubleshooting steps rather than confirmed permanent fixes.

If the AI state becomes stuck again, the problem can return during the next encounter.

A demon that needs regular rebooting is less a servant of Hell and more a haunted office printer.

Patch 3.1.2 Did Not Mention This Problem

Blizzard’s latest patch includes a Warlock fix involving Rampage and Demonform on controllers.

It does not mention Abodian standing idle or any broader improvements to Warlock pet targeting.

That does not mean Blizzard is unaware of the report.

It means there is currently no listed fix players can point to.

Until one arrives, affected Warlocks may need to watch their pets closely instead of assuming they are contributing.

Blizzard Needs A Clear Aggression Rule

Warlock pets should immediately attack enemies that damage the player.

They should also recognise targets already being attacked by the Warlock and move into range without waiting for perfect positioning.

If the pet cannot reach a selected enemy, it should quickly choose another valid target rather than remaining inactive.

These rules sound basic because they are basic.

A combat pet’s first responsibility is participating in combat.

Summoned Demons Should Feel Dangerous

Warlock pets are supposed to be one of the class’s defining features.

They should feel aggressive, reliable and slightly difficult to control.

Standing silently beside a monster while the player dies achieves only the third part.

The report is still small and may not represent every Warlock build.

However, pet AI problems can destroy an entire playstyle even when the rest of the class functions correctly.

Blizzard should investigate Abodian’s targeting and make sure summoned demons reliably enter combat.

Warlocks already made the dangerous decision to invite Hell into the party.

The least Hell can do is help.
