Inferno Tips for New Players

Inferno Tips ( 1.0.8 )

Inferno is brutal. You will die and die a lot, but you’ll die a lot less by playing smart and safe. The following tips and tricks will help you survive Inferno like a pro.

Skills
Defensive skills are critical to surviving Inferno. Use them early and often until you get used to the new difficulty level.

Gameplay
Focus on survivability when you start each new Act. Slowly add damage oriented gear and skills as you begin to farm the current Act for gear before moving to the next Act.

Each Act of Inferno increases the level of the monsters and as a result the difficulty of Inferno greatly increases with each Act.

Bosses in Inferno have new abilities that are not used in prior difficulty modes. Be on the lookout for new attacks.

Combat
Move slowly. Pull monsters at maximum range (full screen width) whenever possible.
Always have an escape route and path for kiting monsters.

Snares and stuns have a much shorter duration in Inferno than the other difficulties, but they’re still critical for your survival.

Never kite monsters back to a checkpoint or waypoint. They’ll be waiting for you on your return!
Rare and Champion monsters in Inferno have enrage timers. You cannot kite them indefinitely.

Separate Champion monsters from their packs whenever possible. It’s difficult, but makes fights much easier.

If necessary, you can kite Rare and Champion monsters away from an area (checkpoints, waypoints, etc) and die. The monsters will stay where you died and leave the path open for where you need to go.

Learn when to fight and when to run. A bad set of Monster Affixes means certain death. Reset and try again if you get a really bad set of affixes.

For soloing, the Enchantress is a strong choice in Inferno with her many crowd control abilities and Armor buff. Check out the Follower guide for details.

Gearing Up
Resists and Armor offer huge returns for increasing survivability. Check out the Inferno Stats page for information on what survival stats to stack for Inferno and in what amounts.

Get Movement Speed on your boots. Inferno mobs move faster than other difficulty levels and Movement Speed makes kiting much easier.

Do not stack the “% Damage to Life” stat. This stat is only 20% as effective in Inferno and not worth using. Life on Hit and Life Regeneration are 100% effective in Inferno and improve your survivability.

Always get a helm with a socket and use an Amethyst (% Life) for progression content.

Improve your farming efficiency by using a helm that has an Emerald (% Extra Gold) or Topaz (% Magic Find) gem.

Regularly check items and the AH for new item stats. Items dropped in Inferno contain stats not available anywhere else in the game.

Act 1 inferno - Elite pack farm

After the patch 1.0.3 Act 1 inferno, can now drop items level 63 gear. That’s what we all want and grave …

Since act 1 inferno is so much easier than act 2, 3 and 4 – Many prefer this method of farming.

But how to get the most out of the time spent? – Well you need to find the elites packs, and in Act 1 they are pretty much in the same place J

So you need a “farm route” – And here is one way to do it.

We assume that you can kill the butcher, since this is a farm route. So you also have all the quests done, and have all the waypoints.

To start, select quest 9, part 2. The imprisoned Angel – The cursed hold. This will give access to the warden part.

Once in the game, take the waypoint (WP) “The festering woods” and head left, towards “the warriors rest” On your way there, you will most likely run in to your first pack, but look around, before you enter the warriors rest. But don’t spend too much time doing so…

Once inside you are guaranteed a pack, kill and town portal (TP) out. WP to “The festering woods” and head right. If you are lucky, you will run into another pack, before entering “Crypt of the ancients” In the crypt you will kill another pack.

TP to town, and WP to “Leoric’s Manor” and go inside the manor (working backwards) Inside the manor, an elite can spawn, if you are lucky. Next, go outside the manor, to the courtyard (Front door, still working backwards). Outside there should be at least 1 pack, perhaps 2, so down run around too much! J

You should be on a 5 stack by now! – Let the guaranteed rare drops start rolling in.

Next we go to the “Cemetery of the Forsaken” Go into all the crypts, and you might also encounter a pack near the middle of the cemetery. All the crypts have at least 1 pack! - When running around the crypt and encounter a level 2, don’t waste your time in there, just run back or TP out and continue. If you run into any events, do them.

After this TP to “Halls of Agony level 2” look for the exit and kill the pack if you run into it. Don’t waste your time, looking for the pack, just the exit. Next is the “Highland passage” not much here, just move along to “The Cursed hold”.
Inside the cursed hold, you need to do the quest, kill the pack and then “The warden”.

Then level 3, find the entrance to “The Butcher” and kill.
If you got the gear, and the “Staff of warding” you can take your 5 stacks into the pony level. If you have trouble with act 2, you can’t survive in here. If not you are done.

It should net you around 20 - 30 rare items, chances are that 1-2 of them is pretty decent.

Small tip, if you have the time, chance your items to MF, just prior to the kill of elites. Practice abit and you should get the hang of it. Start with you biggest MF items, Amulet (max 40%) and Helmet (around 15% and a socket around 19%) nets the biggest MF. – Oh and get movement speed on your boots …

Good luck out there !

An in-depth guide to inferno Act 3 Tower Elite Farming

First off I will like to show of two videos, where somebody explains the general premise. I will go into a bit more depth, and explain some of the problems I have solved after.

As you can see in the vids, he runs through from the last waypoint available, from quest III-7(b):

Run through that level and get through the door. This spawn is WRONG:

This spawn is right:

Until you get the right one, leave and resume, and run through the tower again. Once you get the right one, when you leave and resume, you go back to the checkpoint you got when you entered the right zone. This is very important, and greatly speeds up the runs. Getting the checkpoint is the hard part.

You are on a big stairway, the immediate area to the right is one of the platforms where you want to 'drag' elite packs. You run up to them and agro them, then get right up to the edge, and die. You respawn at the top of the stairs. Proceed to dps them down without getting hurt! When they get low, swap out to full MF gear, and finish the job for good loot.

The red lines are for mobs/bad places you are standing, green are for good places to stand.

Here are bad places to stand if they have Teleport(TP), Mortar(MR) or Frozen(FR). They can and will kill you:

Here are much better places to stand, but can still be a bit weird sometimes:

Down the stairs you started on, there is a small bridge, and to the left of it you can see the platform below you. Here is another area to drag elites, using the same method described above. This is a bad place to stand. Small gap, hard to find the right angles to get everything:

This is much better. Easy to drag them to the general area, you can even stand out of the enrage AoE from the right places here. And of course, out of range of TP, MR and FR:

This also works, the mobs often get stuck on the circled areas. You are safe right in the corner there, with good vision as well:

This is very, very bad. Often, when initially checking if any groups have spawned, we will be surprised by 3 teleporting spearmen, who happily jump the gap and ace us. Again, its only TP, FR and MR you have to worry about, but make sure you know the affix before you stand here:

That sums up most of it. You fight your way through all of the random whites (be careful of the ghoul spawns) and find elites, dragging them to the death zones specified. Goblins are really common, probably just under 50% chance of finding one imo. Typically find 2 elite packs, but sometimes 1 and sometimes 4.

If you get a bad pack annoying you on the stairs, just leave/resume to reset. Seriously, its not worth the battle.

Remember, that once you have found the right spawn once, you NEVER have to run through the previous section until you lose the checkpoint by swapping missions. If you leave/resume and you are in town, the game has spawned the wrong instance of the tower. Just leave/resume until you get the right one again, you will respawn on the stairs when its right.

Keep in mind that I'm not preaching 'awesome' drops, simply the best method I have found for dropping the most rares in the shortest time. Act 3, so up to ilevel 63, I run it with 4 people, we get 1-2 rares per pack on average. Roughly 10 rares every ten minutes for the group, and we share pretty everything.

Skill recommendations:

Demon Hunter: I run hungering arrow/devouring, and nether tentacles. SS is a must for reflect damage groups. Bat companion is perfect for spamming more tentacles, for more dps. Other spells are optional, I use caltrops with the slow rune to make the ghouls easier to handle, and to keep any fast packs under control.

Wizard: The wizards I run it with use the homing magic missile, and the really big arcane ball. Venom Hydra is awesome for dps, but can be tricky to land over the wall. Same goes for blizzard. Other skills are optional. Update from wizard: Arcane w/Celestial, Magic Weapon w/Force Weapon gives more dps too.

Barbarian: Obviously can't dps it himself, but Ignore Pain with the group rune really for reflect damage packs, and helps to clear out the whites with us. Another soldier standing there in MF gear.

Monk: Get the skill that increases party damage, bring your healing spells too. Healing is great for reflects damage.

Witch Doctor: Really not much to say, have never run it with a WD. Splinters I'm guessing, maybe the poison geyser for your spender. I don't think any spawns will be useful over the gap.

Diablo trick: Go Inferno act 4 instant

Here is a pretty neat little trick. For this this to work, you have to be level 60 and have killed Diablo in hell.

Now open a game in normal mode and go to  act 4 quest 1.

Kill the first boss and run up to the first checkpoint (save point).

Leave the game and try to join an "open game".

Scroll down and you´ll see that you can select act 4 quest 1 on inferno!

Try to join it, the tool wont find a game because nobody is there until now. So the game will open itself and you are the leader.

Enjoy :)
