During the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, Blizzard revealed that the classic Diablo II class will return as Diablo IV's next playable class, rebuilt around four gameplay archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander. She will use bows and the returning javelin, with javelins becoming an entirely new weapon type for Diablo IV. Blizzard will show the class in greater detail during today's Diablo IV: What's Next panel, but after several days of rumor, the important part is finally settled.
Amazon is real.
Sometimes the rumor mill does eventually hit something.
Our Amazon Article Was Wrong About One Thing: The Timing Was Even Better Than It Looked
When we published our breakdown of the Amazon rumor before BlizzCon, the central argument was that Amazon was enormously plausible without being genuinely leaked. Lord of Hatred had already moved Diablo IV directly into Skovos, homeland of the Askari, and Blizzard had spent an entire expansion giving that culture considerably more space than it ever received in Diablo II.
That was not accidental groundwork after all.
In its official BlizzCon announcement, Blizzard says Amazon comes from Skovos and is being designed to preserve the disciplined, athletic warrior fantasy players remember while rebuilding the class for modern Diablo IV. That matters because simply importing Diablo II Amazon with a prettier model would have been the least interesting version of this announcement.
Diablo II gave Amazon one of the clearest class identities in the series. Spears. Javelins. Bows. Lightning. Mobility. A woman capable of turning an ordinary throwing weapon into weather.
Diablo IV now has room to take that fantasy considerably further.
Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander
The first genuinely new information is the four-archetype structure. Blizzard names them as Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander, suggesting that Amazon will stretch across several very different interpretations rather than being reduced to “the javelin class.”
Blizzard has not yet published complete skill trees or explained exactly how each archetype functions, so there is no reason to invent builds before the developers show them. The names do, however, give us a useful first outline. Champion suggests a heavier martial approach. Skirmisher fits the fast spear-and-javelin fantasy. Ranger naturally points toward bows and ranged attacks. Commander is the interesting one, because it potentially opens space for Amazon's broader Askari leadership and battlefield identity rather than simply another weapon package.
Today's What's Next presentation should make those distinctions considerably clearer.
For now, the important point is breadth. Amazon appears to be designed as more than nostalgia with lightning attached.
Javelins Are Becoming a New Diablo 4 Weapon Type
Perhaps the most immediately exciting mechanical detail is that javelins are being introduced as a new weapon type in Diablo IV. That gives Amazon something much more valuable than simply borrowing Rogue's existing equipment and placing an Askari helmet on top.
We specifically raised this problem in the rumor article. Diablo IV already has Rogue for bows, agile ranged combat and traps. If Amazon returned primarily as another bow class, Blizzard would have to work hard to prevent the two fantasies from collapsing into each other. Javelins solve a large part of that problem immediately.
A dedicated thrown-weapon archetype can support the classic Amazon fantasy while giving Blizzard room for new mechanics around range, piercing attacks, elemental effects and spear-based melee combat. Anyone who spent Diablo II watching Lightning Fury turn a group of monsters into a brief electrical misunderstanding already knows why the weapon matters.
It also means Diablo IV's equipment ecosystem gets another permanent addition rather than Amazon existing entirely inside systems built for classes already in the game.
The Hand Crossbow Was Still Not an Amazon Clue
There is one amusing casualty of the confirmation. The Amazon rumor was correct, but that does not magically make every piece of supposed evidence correct with it.
The unexplained Hand Crossbow entry that helped drive the speculation still does not particularly point toward Amazon. As we noted before BlizzCon, that discovery originally produced Demon Hunter speculation months before people began attaching it to Amazon. Blizzard has now explicitly highlighted bow and javelin for Amazon rather than Hand Crossbows.
This is a useful reminder of how leaks work. A conclusion can be correct while several arguments used to reach it are still wrong.
Amazon was coming.
The Hand Crossbow did not need to know anything about it.
Blizzard Is Not Calling This Another Expansion Class Yet
Another important detail is what Blizzard has not announced. Amazon is currently described as a class arriving in the first half of 2027, and Blizzard says additional details about the class pack will come later. There has been no announcement tying her to a third Diablo IV expansion.
That makes one part of the pre-BlizzCon rumor especially important to retire. Some speculation had already jumped from “Amazon may be coming” to “Amazon will be the early-access class for the next expansion,” largely because Blizzard previously used that model with Paladin ahead of Lord of Hatred.
Paladin's rollout proved Blizzard was willing to release an expansion class early. It never proved every future class would arrive through the same commercial structure.
Amazon being described as a class pack may indicate Blizzard intends to use a different model this time. Until pricing, ownership requirements and release details are revealed, that is where we should leave it.
We finally escaped one Amazon rumor. There is no need to manufacture its replacement before lunch.
Diablo 4 Is Still Getting Major Content Even With Diablo V Announced
The timing of the Amazon reveal is also significant because Blizzard announced Diablo V for Spring 2029 at the same BlizzCon Opening Ceremony. The obvious concern whenever a sequel appears is that the existing game has just heard somebody measuring its office for new furniture.
Amazon provides the clearest evidence that Diablo IV is not being abandoned immediately.
Blizzard is already committing major class development into 2027, alongside new seasonal content and whatever else today's What's Next panel reveals. Diablo V may now be visible on the horizon, but that horizon is still more than two years away.
Diablo IV apparently plans to kill quite a few demons before handing over the keys.
For Once, We Can Stop Saying “Maybe”
The Amazon rumor became fascinating because the underlying idea was so convincing. Lord of Hatred put us in Skovos. Blizzard expanded Askari history. Diablo IV lacked a dedicated javelin archetype. Amazon remained one of Diablo II's most beloved classes.
It felt right.
That still was not the same thing as evidence.
Now we have evidence.
Amazon is coming to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027. She has four announced gameplay archetypes. Javelins are becoming a new weapon type. And later today Blizzard will give us the first proper look at how the class actually plays.
Three days ago, the sensible answer was:
Amazon makes sense, but Amazon is not confirmed.
Today we can delete the second half.
