Geralt in Diablo 4 Is Apparently Just the Beginning of Blizzard’s Witcher Partnership

Geralt of Rivia is coming to Diablo IV, but the increasingly interesting part of Blizzard's Witcher crossover may not actually be the Geralt skin. CD Projekt Red and Blizzard have now formally presented the collaboration as the beginning of a partnership between the two studios, while simultaneously promising that more information will be revealed at BlizzCon later this month. In other words, professional monster slaying is coming to Sanctuary, and apparently nobody intends to stop after changing one character's trousers.

We already covered how Diablo IV players will be able to unlock a Geralt-themed cosmetic by purchasing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past. The new official announcement gives that crossover considerably more context. CD Projekt Red is bringing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered to Battle.net on September 29, while Blizzard is bringing part of The Continent into Diablo IV. More importantly, CD Projekt Red describes this as the way the two companies are “kicking off a partnership”.

The Witcher 3 Is Coming to Battle.net on September 29

According to the official Blizzard and CD Projekt Red announcement, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered launches through Battle.net on September 29. The updated version includes visual and gameplay improvements together with both major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

Geralt is also returning in Songs of the Past, a brand-new Witcher 3 expansion that sends him to the land of Letten to deal with another ancient evil that has presumably failed to notice that hiring Geralt tends to end badly for ancient evil. When pre-purchases for that expansion become available, anyone who pre-orders it — or purchases it after launch — will receive access to the Geralt-themed Diablo IV skin.

It is an unusual crossover because the Diablo cosmetic is effectively attached to buying content for another RPG rather than purchasing something from Diablo IV's own shop. Considering Diablo IV has recently been experimenting with different ways of distributing cosmetics, including mysterious free shop items appearing for selected players, this is another slightly different approach to getting new armor into Sanctuary.

Blizzard and CD Projekt Red Say More Is Coming at BlizzCon

The sentence worth paying attention to is at the end of the Diablo IV section. Blizzard and CD Projekt Red say their teams have created something special for fans of both franchises and that they “can't wait to share more information at BlizzCon this September.”

That could simply mean a proper reveal of the Geralt armor, pricing details and information about exactly which Diablo IV classes can use it. But when the same announcement explicitly describes this as the start of a wider partnership, there is at least room for something more ambitious.

BlizzCon is already becoming unusually important for Diablo IV. Blizzard deliberately withheld portions of Season 15 from its public test, something we discussed in our Season 15 PTR evaluation, because additional seasonal content is being saved for the September convention. There is also continuing speculation around whether Blizzard is saving a potential Diablo IV Switch 2 announcement for BlizzCon.

Now Geralt is joining the queue.

The Witcher and Diablo Are an Almost Suspiciously Natural Match

As videogame crossovers go, this one requires less explanation than most. Geralt travels through miserable villages, investigates supernatural horrors, mixes potions, upgrades increasingly dangerous weapons and gets paid to remove monsters from places where monsters have become inconvenient.

Diablo players have been doing approximately the same thing for decades, although usually with less concern for local politics and considerably more enthusiasm for opening every barrel in the building.

That does not mean we should immediately expect Ciri as a Rogue, Yennefer wandering around Kyovashad or a Diablo boss appearing somewhere in The Witcher. Nothing beyond the Geralt-themed skin has been confirmed for Diablo IV.

But the language Blizzard and CD Projekt Red are using makes this worth watching beyond a single cosmetic.

Geralt coming to Sanctuary is now confirmed.

What “the beginning of a partnership” actually means is apparently a question for BlizzCon.

Diablo 4 Is Getting a Geralt Skin — But It Comes With a Witcher 3 Expansion Purchase

Geralt of Rivia is coming to Sanctuary.

Sort of.

CD Projekt Red and Blizzard have officially announced a new partnership that will bring a Geralt-inspired cosmetic skin to Diablo IV.

And considering Diablo is a game about wandering through miserable villages while professionally removing monsters from people's basements, this may be one of the less confusing crossovers Blizzard has attempted.

There is one slightly unusual detail.

You do not unlock the Diablo IV skin by buying something in Diablo IV.

Instead, the cosmetic will be available to players who purchase CD Projekt Red's upcoming The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past expansion through Battle.net.

The expansion is due in 2027.

Pre-purchases are not open yet.

But when they do open, buying Songs of the Past on Battle.net will unlock the Geralt-themed Diablo IV skin.

And apparently this is only the beginning.

The Witcher 3 Is Coming to Battle.net

The crossover is part of a much larger partnership between Blizzard and CD Projekt Red.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered launches on September 29, 2026, bringing Geralt's enormous 2015 adventure to Battle.net for the first time.

The Remastered release includes both major expansions:

  • Hearts of Stone
  • Blood and Wine

It also includes visual, performance and gameplay improvements and will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.

Existing owners on qualifying platforms will receive Remastered as a free upgrade.

For Battle.net, however, this is completely new territory.

CD Projekt Red has historically sold its PC games through platforms including GOG and Steam.

Now one of the biggest RPGs ever made is entering Blizzard's ecosystem.

And Blizzard is apparently celebrating by letting Diablo IV players dress like the man who has spent several decades explaining that silver is for monsters.

The Geralt Skin Is Tied to Songs of the Past

The important distinction is that simply buying The Witcher 3: Remastered does not appear to be enough to unlock the Diablo IV cosmetic.

The reward is specifically connected to Songs of the Past.

CD Projekt Red says the skin will become available when pre-purchase opens for the expansion on Battle.net.

Players who buy the expansion later, after its full 2027 release, will still be eligible.

So this is not a limited pre-order bonus that disappears forever if you happen to be doing something else that week.

That is nice.

The stranger part is simply where the transaction happens.

Want a Diablo IV skin?

Buy a Witcher expansion.

Modern gaming has finally achieved cross-franchise accounting.

We Haven't Actually Seen the Full Skin Yet

Blizzard and CD Projekt Red are still being deliberately vague about exactly what the Geralt-inspired cosmetic contains.

The announcement describes it as a skin inspired by Geralt rather than saying Geralt himself becomes a playable Diablo IV character.

That distinction matters.

This sounds like cosmetic equipment designed around his appearance, not a Fortnite-style situation where Geralt simply arrives in Sanctuary as Geralt.

We also do not yet know which Diablo IV class will use it.

There are some obvious candidates.

A sword-wielding character would make sense.

Something capable of recreating the silhouette of Geralt's armor would help.

And if Blizzard somehow gives it to a class that spends the entire game firing projectiles from 30 metres away, several Witchers may quietly object.

Fortunately, we will not have to speculate forever.

BlizzCon Will Reveal More

Both companies explicitly point toward BlizzCon 2026 for the next stage of the collaboration.

CD Projekt Red representatives will attend Blizzard's convention in Anaheim in September, where the teams plan to show more of the Geralt-inspired Diablo IV skin and discuss the partnership in greater detail.

And CD Projekt Red is being unusually unsubtle about the possibility of additional surprises.

In its own announcement, the studio says bringing The Witcher games to Battle.net is:

“just the beginning of our partnership with Blizzard.”

It also says the teams are preparing more surprises for fans of both companies.

That is considerably broader than:

Here is one promotional armor set. Thank you and goodbye.

This Crossover Actually Makes Some Sense

Diablo IV has become considerably more comfortable with external collaborations.

And as crossover partners go, The Witcher is hardly a violent aesthetic collision.

Both franchises involve dark fantasy worlds full of:

  • Demons
  • Monsters
  • Curses
  • Ancient evils
  • Villagers making extremely poor decisions
  • Professionals being asked to clean up afterward

Geralt could walk into several Diablo IV side quests and probably not realize he had changed franchises until somebody mentioned Treasure Goblins.

The Witcher's armor designs also fit Sanctuary considerably better than many potential crossover cosmetics.

A Geralt-inspired set does not need neon lights, giant logos or an explanation from the multiverse department.

Leather.

Chainmail.

Swords.

Scars.

General exhaustion with humanity.

Diablo already has most of the ingredients.

Songs of the Past Brings Geralt Back in 2027

The actual Witcher expansion behind the promotion is interesting in its own right.

Songs of the Past is a completely new story expansion for The Witcher 3 being developed by CD Projekt Red together with Fool's Theory.

It takes Geralt to a new region called Letten, described as the idyllic homeland of Dandelion.

Naturally, there is something terrible underneath it.

This is The Witcher.

A peaceful rural village without a horrifying secret would constitute a serious breach of franchise policy.

The expansion introduces new quests, enemies and characters and is positioned as another major adventure for Geralt more than a decade after The Witcher 3 originally launched.

It releases sometime in 2027.

Blizzard Is Building a Much Bigger Battle.net

The partnership may also be interesting beyond Diablo.

Battle.net has historically been overwhelmingly associated with Blizzard's own games.

Bringing The Witcher 3 onto the platform represents another step toward making it a broader PC storefront rather than simply the launcher you open because World of Warcraft or Diablo demands it.

And tying cross-game cosmetics to purchases is a fairly obvious way to encourage Blizzard's existing audience to notice those additions.

Diablo players see Geralt armor.

They investigate Songs of the Past.

Witcher players install Battle.net.

Blizzard gains another customer inside its ecosystem.

Everybody understands the assignment.

The Purchase Requirement Will Probably Divide Players

There will inevitably be people who dislike the way the skin is distributed.

If you only play Diablo IV and want the Geralt cosmetic, buying an entirely different game's expansion is a much larger commitment than buying a normal cosmetic bundle.

We do not yet know the price of Songs of the Past.

That makes it impossible to judge the value of the promotion properly.

For somebody already planning to buy the expansion on Battle.net, the Diablo IV skin is simply a bonus.

For somebody who only wants the Diablo cosmetic?

That could become an extremely expensive pair of trousers.

It will therefore be important to see whether Blizzard eventually offers the Geralt-inspired skin through any other route.

Neither company has announced one so far.

And This May Not Be the Only Diablo × Witcher Reward

The wording around the partnership is what makes this story more interesting than one cosmetic.

CD Projekt Red says there are “more surprises” being prepared.

Blizzard says more details will arrive at BlizzCon.

That leaves plenty of room.

Weapons inspired by Geralt's silver and steel swords?

Roach as a mount?

Witcher trophies?

Something moving the other way, putting Diablo cosmetics into The Witcher 3?

None of those have been announced.

For now, they are exactly what they sound like:

possibilities.

But the companies themselves are telling us not to treat the Geralt skin as the end of the collaboration.

Geralt Fits Sanctuary Almost Too Well

There are crossovers where the first reaction is:

Why?

This one is more:

How did this take so long?

The Witcher and Diablo have very different approaches to storytelling and combat, but aesthetically they occupy neighboring properties in the same unpleasant fantasy district.

A Geralt-inspired Diablo IV skin is hardly going to destroy Sanctuary's immersion.

The bigger question is whether Diablo players will be willing to buy a Witcher expansion to get it.

We'll know more at BlizzCon.

And judging by how both Blizzard and CD Projekt Red are talking about this partnership, Geralt's wardrobe may only be the opening move.
