Diablo 4 Warlock Players Say Belly of the Beast Quest Is Blocking Progress

Diablo IV Season 15 has given Warlocks plenty of new ways to become catastrophically powerful. Unfortunately, some players are discovering that the hardest enemy in the new season is currently a pentagram that has already been drawn. Reports are piling up around the Warlock class quest Belly of the Beast, where players are reaching the objective to "Trace the Pentagram" only to find the symbol already completed and the quest refusing to advance. Relogging sometimes fixes it. Changing difficulty sometimes fixes it. Turning off cross-play sometimes fixes it. For other players, Sanctuary simply stares back and asks whether they have considered another character.

The largest discussion is currently taking place in a Diablo IV PC Bug Report thread, where players began reporting the problem shortly after Season 15 launched. The basic symptom is remarkably consistent: the player reaches the ritual location, but the pentagram appears fully traced before the interaction begins. Because the game never sees the player completing the tracing sequence correctly, the next stage fails to trigger.

That would be irritating in any side quest.

It is considerably worse when the quest belongs to the Warlock's class progression.

Belly of the Beast Can Stop at the Pentagram

The most common version of the bug appears at the "Trace the Pentagram" objective.

Normally, players are supposed to activate the ritual and move around the area while the bloody pentagram draws itself beneath them. When the bug occurs, the entire symbol is already visible before the process begins. Moving around it does nothing, and the quest remains stuck.

Players in the bug thread describe seeing several other Warlocks standing around the same location, which is usually a useful sign that the problem is not an exceptionally complicated puzzle everyone independently failed to understand.

The ritual is supposed to progress.

It simply does not.

The Warlock's Soul Shard System Makes This More Than a Minor Quest Bug

This matters because Warlock class progression is tied directly to one of the class's defining systems.

Blizzard's official Warlock class overview explains that Warlocks build around Soul Shards, with different Shards defining their archetype, summoned demon and core gameplay loop. The class mechanic unlocks as the Warlock develops, while its dedicated questline begins much earlier in Ked Bardu.

We covered that system in our original Diablo IV Warlock guide, where the class already looked much less like a Sorcerer wearing black and considerably more like someone who thought binding demons directly into their body sounded efficient.

That is why being blocked inside the associated quest chain is more serious than missing a little Gold and an equipment cache.

Warlock players want access to the systems their class was built around.

The pentagram would apparently like to discuss terms first.

Changing Difficulty Works for Some Players

The most frequently reported workaround is changing difficulty.

Several players say they reached the bugged pentagram, returned to town or left the game, changed from Normal or Hard to another difficulty such as Expert or Penitent, and then returned. In successful cases, the pentagram was no longer pre-completed and the tracing sequence worked normally.

One player described moving from Hard to Penitent before returning to the ritual. Another tried both Normal and Hard without success before switching to Expert, which finally caused the event to initialize correctly.

This makes difficulty swapping worth trying.

It does not make it a guaranteed fix.

Other players report repeating the same process several times without getting the quest to advance.

Turning Off Cross-Play Seems to Help Too

The second workaround is stranger but has been reported by multiple players.

Several Warlocks say disabling cross-play, leaving the game and then logging back in caused the ritual to behave correctly. In those successful attempts, the pentagram started incomplete and traced itself as the player moved around the ritual site.

One forum user described the correct state particularly clearly: if you arrive and the whole pentagram is already visible, the quest appears to be stuck. After disabling cross-play and re-entering the game, the tracing begins from part of the symbol instead, allowing the objective to complete.

Again, this is a community workaround.

It is not an official fix.

And at least one player reported that neither difficulty changes nor repeated relogs solved the problem.

What to Try if Belly of the Beast Is Stuck

Based on the reports currently available, players can try the following without abandoning the quest:

  1. Leave the game while standing near the pentagram.
  2. Disable cross-play in the connection settings.
  3. Log back into the character and return to the ritual.
  4. If the pentagram is still already completed, try changing difficulty.
  5. Return and activate the ritual again.
  6. If necessary, repeat the relog after changing difficulty.

Some players have also reported better results after completing the other available Warlock quest steps first and returning to Belly of the Beast later.

None of these methods should be treated as reliable enough to deserve the sacred title of "fix."

They are things people have managed to persuade the game to accept.

There is a difference.

Belly of the Beast Is Not the Only Warlock Quest Causing Trouble

The broader concern is that players are reporting progression problems across several Warlock quests at the same time.

Fang and Flame has its own reports involving the "Acquire the Heart of Malice" objective. Players say the required target or item does not appear, leaving the quest unable to advance. Once again, some report success after changing difficulty or disabling cross-play.

There are similar reports for The Insatiable Hunter. One player reached the Blistered Barrens expecting Hattar and an entrance to the Halls of the Devoured, only to find neither. Repeated relogs and difficulty changes initially failed, although the player later reported that leaving the game for more than ten minutes finally allowed the quest to continue.

A separate console discussion groups all three together, with players reporting problems in Belly of the Beast, Fang and Flame and The Insatiable Hunter.

That does not prove all three problems share the same technical cause.

But it does suggest Belly of the Beast is not an isolated piece of misbehaving geometry.

Season 15 Arrived With a Lot of Quest-State Problems

The Warlock reports also fit the generally messy first few days of Season 15.

The season itself had to be delayed after launch-day login problems, as we covered in our Season 15 launch report. Solo Self Found remained unavailable after the normal Seasonal Realm returned, and players subsequently began reporting old Paragon, Gold and other progression appearing on fresh seasonal characters.

Yesterday we also looked at older Eternal Mythics being caught by the returning Crafted Mythic restriction.

None of those issues automatically explains the Warlock quests.

They do establish that Season 15 has had a rather ambitious first week.

The Timing Is Particularly Bad for Warlock

Warlock is one of the classes players are especially motivated to revisit this season.

During the PTR, Warlock builds were producing some extraordinarily large damage numbers. We covered Blazing Scream builds reaching frankly unreasonable territory on the Season 15 PTR, while our later look at Warlock's Season 15 potential showed several new Uniques and seasonal interactions pushing the class toward the top of the early meta discussion.

Players therefore have plenty of reasons to roll a Warlock right now.

They would simply prefer the class quest to agree.

Do Not Assume Your Character Is Permanently Broken

The good news is that players who encounter the problem do not appear to have permanently damaged their character.

Multiple people have eventually managed to continue after changing difficulty, disabling cross-play, relogging or simply returning later. That suggests the underlying quest state can still initialize correctly.

So deleting the character and starting again would be an impressively dramatic first response.

Especially because a newly created Warlock could eventually arrive at exactly the same pentagram and join the waiting room.

Try the non-destructive workarounds first.

There Is No Confirmed Universal Workaround Yet

This is probably the most important warning for anyone finding this article because their Warlock is currently staring at the ritual.

There is no single workaround that works for everyone.

Difficulty swapping has worked.

Cross-play disabling has worked.

Repeated relogs have worked.

Doing other quests first has apparently worked.

Waiting and returning later has worked for a related Warlock quest.

And every one of those solutions has also failed for somebody.

So if the first attempt does nothing, you are not necessarily doing the workaround incorrectly. The quest appears to be inconsistent.

There Is Still No Official Fix Note

As of September 17, the Belly of the Beast thread remains active on Blizzard's bug-report forum, with thousands of views and continuing player reports.

Blizzard has not yet published a hotfix note specifically saying that Belly of the Beast, Fang and Flame or The Insatiable Hunter has been corrected.

That could change quickly. Quest-state problems are exactly the sort of issue that can disappear in a small server-side update or hotfix.

Until then, however, players should treat every community workaround as temporary advice rather than confirmation that the underlying problem has been solved.

Season 15's Strongest Warlock Build Still Needs to Get Past the Quest

There is something uniquely Diablo about all of this.

The Warlock can bind demons.

It can tear open the veil between worlds.

It can command Hell's own creatures and produce damage numbers so large they begin threatening spreadsheet software.

But if one ritual circle loads in the wrong state, everybody goes home.

Hopefully Belly of the Beast receives an official fix soon.

Until then, try changing difficulty, try disabling cross-play, relog and keep the character.

The pentagram may eventually remember that you are supposed to be the one tracing it.
