There are few things more frustrating in Diablo 4 than discovering that your character has been defeated by something you cannot actually fight. Not Diablo, not Baal, not even an unusually enthusiastic pack of demons. Just a broken quest. That is precisely what some players have experienced in Season 15, where a nasty progression bug has prevented them from completing the seasonal storyline and unlocking Prime Evil Powers. Blizzard has now confirmed that Diablo 4 Patch 3.2.3, scheduled for October 14, 2026, will prevent the problem from happening again. Unfortunately, players who are already affected have a little more work ahead of them.
The Season 15 Bug That Locked Players Out of Prime Evil Powers
The problem revolves around the Splinters of the Prime Evils, one of the central mechanics of Season of Hell's Legacy. These powerful items allow players to channel the abilities of Diablo, Mephisto, or Baal, adding another layer of supernatural destruction to an already rather crowded battlefield. Under normal circumstances, players progress through the seasonal questline, unlock the relevant systems, and eventually gain access to their Prime Evil Powers. However, a bug allowed characters to use a Splinter of a Prime Evil before completing the necessary quests, leaving their progression in a state that the game apparently did not know how to resolve.
For affected players, this could mean being unable to complete the seasonal storyline while the Prime Evil Powers interface remained locked. Some reported being stuck during the Legacy of Hope quest, with the game asking them to place a Splinter on Deckard Cain's table even though that Splinter was already active. Returning to the table did not necessarily help, and neither did simply restarting the game. It is an especially irritating problem in a season built around revisiting Diablo's history, because nothing quite captures the spirit of the Burning Hells like being trapped in an administrative disagreement with Deckard Cain.
Patch 3.2.3 Prevents the Bug, but Does Not Repair Existing Characters
According to Blizzard's official Diablo 4 patch notes, the October 14 update will prevent characters from using a Splinter of a Prime Evil before completing the seasonal questline. That should stop additional players from encountering this particular progression problem. However, Blizzard also makes an important distinction: the update will not automatically reset broken quest progression on characters that have already encountered the bug.
Instead, affected players must create another seasonal character in the same partition and complete the seasonal questline with that character. Once completed, Prime Evil Powers should become available to all characters within that partition. Blizzard specifically distinguishes between Normal and Hardcore characters, as well as regular and Solo Self-Found characters, so choosing the correct partition matters. The good news is that players do not need to delete their original character. The bad news is that they may have to revisit a storyline they thought they had already finished. Sanctuary has never been particularly respectful of anyone's free time.
How to Unlock Prime Evil Powers if Your Character Is Stuck
If your Season 15 character has already encountered this problem, Blizzard's instructions provide a way forward once the update arrives. The process is relatively straightforward, although completing the seasonal questline again may take some time.
- Wait for Patch 3.2.3, scheduled for October 14, to become available.
- Create a new seasonal character in the same partition as your affected character.
- Complete the seasonal questline on that new character.
- Unlock Prime Evil Powers through normal seasonal progression.
- Return to your original character and check whether the Prime Evil Powers are now available.
It is important to understand that this is an account-partition unlock workaround, not a promise that every broken quest objective on the original character will be individually repaired. Blizzard's stated solution concerns access to Prime Evil Powers across characters in the same partition. Players who have not encountered the bug should simply continue their seasonal progression normally, while avoiding premature use of Prime Evil Splinters until the update is installed.
Other Fixes Coming in Diablo 4 Patch 3.2.3
The seasonal quest problem is the headline, but it is not the only issue being addressed. Blizzard is also fixing several annoyances involving bosses, loot, crafting, and class mechanics. Tyrael's position after defeating Baal could make the boss's loot difficult to collect, while the Sandstone Golem in the Horadric Library could fail to respawn after a player died during the encounter. The Countess in the Forgotten Tower could also pass through the fog wall and prevent the encounter from progressing. Apparently, even the demons have been experimenting with ways to avoid doing their jobs.
The Horadric Cube is receiving attention as well. Several affixes that could not previously be rerolled will become eligible, including Impairment Reduction, Barrier Generation, Healing, and Critical Strike Damage. Necromancers should also benefit from a fix for monsters that failed to drop Unbroken Bones during the Call of the Underworld class quest. General stability, performance, interface, and visual improvements round out the update.
A Necessary Fix With an Unfortunate Catch
Patch 3.2.3 looks like a welcome maintenance update for Diablo 4's Season of Hell's Legacy, particularly for players who have been struggling with seasonal progression. Preventing new characters from becoming permanently stuck is clearly the priority, and the additional boss and crafting fixes should remove several smaller frustrations. Nevertheless, requiring affected players to complete the seasonal storyline on another character is hardly an elegant solution, especially when the original problem was caused by the game's own progression system.
For now, the important date is October 14. Players who have already lost access to Prime Evil Powers should prepare for the workaround, while everyone else can look forward to a slightly less unpredictable journey through Sanctuary. The Prime Evils are supposed to be dangerous. The quest tracker, preferably, should not be.
