The cooldown itself is not a secret. Blizzard mentioned it in the official Hotfix 4 notes. What Blizzard did not mention is how long the cooldown lasts, whether a player is currently eligible for rewards or why the Tristram fountain still accepts another Wirt's Lucky Coin when the encounter apparently has nothing useful to give.
That is becoming an expensive problem because Wirt's Lucky Coin is not something players casually pick up beside the blacksmith.
Hotfix 4 Fixed the Portal and Changed the Loot
When we covered Diablo IV Hotfix 4 yesterday, the headline fix was good news. Blizzard corrected the bug where the Old Tristram fountain could consume Wirt's Lucky Coin without creating the portal to Uber Tristram. Players had been losing hours of farming because the game accepted the currency and then effectively shrugged.
The same hotfix also addressed what Blizzard described as excessive experience and loot from the Prime Evil Council. The solution was straightforward: increase the cooldown before the encounter can grant loot again.
That makes sense as an anti-exploit measure.
The problem is what happens when nobody tells the fountain.
The Fountain Still Takes Your Coin
Players testing Uber Tristram after the hotfix have reported completing one successful run, resetting the instance and then using another Wirt's Lucky Coin. The second portal opens normally. The Prime Evil Council appears normally. Diablo, Baal and Mephisto can all be defeated normally.
Then the loot arrives.
Or rather, largely does not.
One player on Blizzard's forums described receiving proper rewards from the first encounter before trying again after an instance reset. The second run produced essentially only Standard of Heroes. Other players in the same discussion reported similar experiences after returning thirty minutes or several hours later.
From the game's point of view, nothing appears to warn the player that the loot cooldown is still active. Wirt's Lucky Coin can still be consumed, the portal still opens and the entire encounter can still be completed.
The warning arrives at the traditional Diablo moment.
When you look at the floor.
Nobody Knows the Exact Cooldown Yet
This is the most important part: Blizzard has not published the actual cooldown duration.
The official notes only say that the cooldown for the Prime Evil Council granting loot has been increased. There is no stated number of minutes or hours.
One community report says that after waiting roughly nine hours, another Uber Tristram run successfully produced loot again. That does not prove the cooldown is nine hours. It only tells us that in that particular case, nine hours was long enough. Another player in the same thread correctly pointed out that the timer could therefore be shorter.
Until Blizzard provides the actual value or players reproduce it more precisely, treating “nine hours” as the official cooldown would be guessing.
For now, the safest information is considerably less satisfying: there is a cooldown, it appears to last substantially longer than the sort of short reset some players expected, and the game does not clearly tell you when it has expired.
That Is a Problem Because Wirt’s Lucky Coin Is Expensive
Our Uber Tristram and Hellfire Torch guide covers the full process, but the short version is that Wirt's Lucky Coin requires Splinters connected to Diablo, Baal and Mephisto. Those materials are then combined through the Horadric Cube before the resulting coin can be used at the fountain in Old Tristram.
This is not a boss key purchased from a vendor for pocket change.
Players are farming specifically to create these coins because the Prime Evil Council can reward some of Season 15's most desirable anniversary loot, including the returning Hellfire Torch.
Using a rare key while unknowingly ineligible for rewards therefore feels very different from wasting a normal dungeon reset.
You are not simply losing five minutes.
You are throwing several hours of preparation into a fountain and receiving a practical demonstration of server-side cooldown technology.
The Obvious Fix Is a Warning
Interestingly, many of the complaints are not demanding that Blizzard remove the cooldown entirely.
Players understand why the Prime Evil Council should not become an unlimited Mythic-and-experience dispenser. The frustration is that the game currently appears willing to let them spend the entrance currency while the reward system is still locked.
A simple message would solve most of that problem.
“You are not currently eligible for Prime Evil Council rewards.”
Even better, disable the fountain until the cooldown expires or display the remaining time. Several players in the forum discussion independently suggested exactly that.
Diablo IV already understands timers. Sanctuary contains enough cooldowns, reset windows and event schedules to operate a small airport. There is no obvious reason the most important one in Uber Tristram needs to be invisible.
Uber Tristram Has Had a Rough First Week
The whole situation is particularly unfortunate because Uber Tristram is one of the best secrets in Season 15's enormous anniversary hunt.
First, players had to discover how Wirt's Lucky Coin worked. Then some coins disappeared without opening the portal. Blizzard fixed that problem with Hotfix 4. Now players can confidently use their coins and enter Uber Tristram, only to discover that the reward portion of the encounter may still be unavailable.
Technically, that is progress.
Emotionally, it may be difficult to explain to the player holding an empty loot bag.
For Now, Do Not Spam Wirt’s Lucky Coins
Until Blizzard clarifies the cooldown, the practical advice is simple: do not immediately run repeated Uber Tristram encounters with additional Wirt's Lucky Coins.
A successful portal does not currently guarantee that the Prime Evil Council is eligible to provide its full rewards. Community reports suggest that waiting several hours is safer, but there is not enough confirmed information yet to give an exact timer.
We will update our Uber Tristram coverage when Blizzard provides the actual duration or the community reproduces it reliably.
Hotfix 4 fixed the fountain eating Wirt's Lucky Coin without opening anything.
Now we just need the fountain to stop eating one when the bosses have apparently decided they are on lunch break.
