Diablo 4 Players May Have Farmed Lair Bosses For Mythics That Couldn’t Drop

Diablo 4 players spend a lot of time collecting Lair Keys.

They choose a boss, burn the materials and hope the correct Unique finally appears with the Mythic treatment.

Unfortunately, Blizzard has now confirmed that some of those targeted rewards could not become Mythic at all.

Including items from Lair Bosses.

Sanctuary’s casino was apparently accepting chips while forgetting to place several jackpots inside the machine.

Blizzard Confirmed The Mythic Drop Bug

Patch 3.1.1 fixed an issue that prevented certain sources of Unique items from dropping as Mythics.

Blizzard specifically named Lair Bosses as one of the affected sources.

Under Diablo 4’s current item system, a Unique can potentially drop with Mythic quality. Lair Bosses are especially important because their individual loot pools allow players to target particular items.

That system only works when the targeted item can actually receive the expected upgrade.

Before the fix, players may have repeatedly farmed the correct boss while having no chance of receiving the Mythic version they wanted.

Players Still Do Not Know Exactly What Was Broken

Blizzard’s patch note does not identify every affected boss or Unique.

It also does not explain when the problem began.

That leaves players unable to calculate how many Lair Keys were spent on impossible drops.

A player might have completed ten affected runs.

Another might have completed several hundred.

Both received the same warning after the materials were already gone: a single sentence inside the patch notes.

Lair Keys Represent Real Farming Time

Lair Bosses are not free loot fountains.

Players must earn the appropriate keys, reach the boss and spend those resources for each reward attempt.

That makes this bug worse than an ordinary low drop rate.

Bad luck means the reward was possible but did not appear.

A broken loot source means the desired reward may never have been included in the roll.

One is RNG.

The other is an expensive decorative ritual.

The Patch Also Increased Iconic Mythic Chances

Patch 3.1.1 increased the chance that naturally dropped Mythics become Iconic Mythics.

However, Blizzard did not say that the general Mythic drop rate from every boss was increased.

The distinction matters.

Lair Bosses can now correctly produce eligible Mythic versions, and a Mythic that drops has a better chance of being Iconic.

That does not guarantee frequent Mythics.

It merely means the lottery now claims to contain all the advertised prizes.

Some Players Say The Results Still Feel Broken

Forum users have reported dozens or even hundreds of post-patch Lair Boss runs without finding an Iconic Mythic.

One player recorded 70 Grigoire keys, 126 Greater Lair Keys and 38 Superior Lair Keys, receiving several ordinary Mythics but no Iconic Mythic.

Those are player-reported results, not proof that the patch failed.

Extremely rare drops can produce terrible streaks even when the system works correctly.

However, after an acknowledged loot bug, Blizzard should expect players to question every long drought.

Blizzard Needs Better Compensation And Transparency

Blizzard should publish which bosses and items were affected, along with the period during which the bug was active.

Players who spent substantial numbers of Lair Keys during that window should also receive replacement materials.

Restoring the drop table fixes future runs.

It does nothing for the keys already consumed chasing items that could not appear correctly.

Diablo 4’s endgame depends on players trusting its loot systems.

They can tolerate terrible luck.

They are considerably less enthusiastic about discovering that luck was never involved.
