Diablo 4 has spent several years trying to answer a surprisingly awkward question:
What do you do when your character is too strong for the content you are playing, but not quite ready to move everything up another difficulty tier?
Season 15 may have a rather simple answer.
Just open a portal and make one fight considerably worse.
Blizzard is testing a new system called Challenge Dungeons, which will appear across Sanctuary and allow players to voluntarily take on boss encounters above their current difficulty.
And on Torment, you can push the fight up to three Torment tiers higher than the difficulty you are currently playing.
Naturally, greater suffering comes with greater rewards.
Challenge Dungeons Appear in the Open World
Challenge Dungeons are accessed through portals that appear while exploring the Overland.
Enter one and you will be transported into a dedicated encounter against a powerful boss.
The interesting part begins once you are playing on Torment difficulty.
Instead of simply accepting whatever difficulty the rest of Sanctuary is currently using, Challenge Dungeons allow you to choose a considerably harder version of the fight.
Blizzard says players can increase the challenge by as much as three Torment tiers above their current setting.
That creates a useful middle ground.
You do not necessarily have to make every monster in Sanctuary more dangerous just because your build is capable of punching above its weight for one encounter.
Risk and Reward Without Changing the Whole World
This is what makes Challenge Dungeons potentially more interesting than another dungeon icon on the map.
Diablo 4 already has several ways to test powerful characters.
The Pit is fundamentally built around climbing increasingly difficult tiers. Nightmare Dungeons can become progressively nastier. Escalating Nightmares deliberately stack problems on top of problems until the game starts resembling a health-and-safety investigation.
Challenge Dungeons approach difficulty differently.
They are short, optional tests.
See a portal.
Choose how ambitious you are feeling.
Discover approximately thirty seconds later whether that confidence was justified.
That is very Diablo.
There Is an Important PTR Warning
Players testing the system right now should not become too attached to the actual encounters.
Blizzard specifically says the Challenge Dungeons available during the 3.2.0 PTR were built to test the underlying mechanic.
The final Season 15 version will contain different content.
That means the bosses, layouts or exact encounters currently being tested should not necessarily be treated as previews of what we will be farming when the season launches.
The important thing being tested is the structure:
Overland portal. Boss encounter. Player-selected difficulty. Better rewards for taking a bigger risk.
Diablo 4 Needs More Reasons to Take Stupid Risks
One of the pleasures of Diablo has always been knowing that you probably should not attempt something yet — and doing it anyway.
Maybe your resistances are terrible.
Maybe your build is held together by one Unique, three hopeful Temper rolls and sheer arrogance.
Maybe that boss technically belongs several difficulty tiers above you.
But perhaps it will drop something wonderful.
Challenge Dungeons formalise that temptation.
Instead of the game simply telling you which difficulty you belong in, it gives you an opportunity to temporarily reach beyond it.
And if Blizzard gets the reward scaling right, these portals could become some of the most tempting things to stumble across in Season 15.
Not because every player will be able to clear them at maximum difficulty.
Because everyone will eventually convince themselves that they probably can.
That usually ends well.
