Diablo 4 Hotfix 4 Fixes Wirt’s Coin, Infinite Butcher, Missing Sparks and More

Diablo IV Season 15 has been extremely good at hiding secrets and slightly less successful at making sure all of them work once players find them. Blizzard has now deployed Hotfix 4 for Patch 3.2.1, and this one reads less like a routine maintenance update and more like somebody finally walked through Sanctuary with a large toolbox. Wirt's Lucky Coin should no longer disappear without opening Uber Tristram, the endlessly summonable Butcher has been evicted, missing Resplendent Sparks have been addressed and several other problems that have followed Season of Hell's Legacy since launch are now officially marked as fixed.

The most important correction for secret hunters is probably the Tristram fountain. Blizzard's official Hotfix 4 notes confirm that the bug causing Wirt's Lucky Coin to be consumed without opening the portal has been fixed. That problem was particularly unpleasant because obtaining the coin requires players to collect Splinters of Terror, Destruction and Hatred and combine them in the Horadric Cube. Losing the resulting coin did not simply waste a button press. It could erase a considerable amount of farming.

Wirt's Lucky Coin Should Finally Be Safe to Use

The timing is important because Uber Tristram has quickly become one of Season 15's biggest discoveries. As we explained in our guide to Uber Tristram and the returning Hellfire Torch, players create Wirt's Lucky Coin from the three Prime Evil Splinters, take it to the fountain in Old Tristram and make a wish. When the system behaves itself, the coin disappears and a portal to Uber Tristram opens.

Unfortunately, “when the system behaves itself” became an increasingly important part of that explanation. Players began reporting that the fountain would happily consume the coin and then provide absolutely nothing in return. Blizzard's forums eventually accumulated hundreds of posts around the issue, with some players losing repeated attempts while the community experimented with fresh instances, cross-play settings and other possible workarounds.

Hotfix 4 finally addresses the actual problem rather than asking players to perform another ritual around the ritual. If the fix holds, one of Season 15's best secrets should now be considerably less stressful to attempt.

The Infinite Butcher Has Also Been Stopped

Another entertaining problem involved The Butcher spawning infinitely. That sentence sounds much more like a feature when written down, particularly if your preferred Diablo experience involves hearing “Fresh meat!” often enough to become an environmental sound effect, but Blizzard has officially classified it as a bug and removed it.

Season 15 has already produced enough unusual encounters without requiring an industrial Butcher production line. The fix should prevent players from repeatedly triggering the encounter in situations where the boss was never supposed to become renewable livestock.

It is perhaps fitting that a season celebrating thirty years of Diablo briefly managed to recreate one of the franchise's oldest traditions: players finding a mechanic and immediately determining how many times per hour it could be exploited.

The Missing Resplendent Spark Is Fixed

The hotfix also addresses one of the more expensive-looking progression bugs. Blizzard says the Resplendent Cache from Seasonal Reputation now correctly grants a Resplendent Spark.

Players had reached the relevant reputation reward and discovered that the cache simply did not contain the Spark it was supposed to provide. Given how important Resplendent Sparks are for Mythic Unique crafting, this was not a cosmetic inconvenience. Seasonal progression was effectively handing players a carefully wrapped box containing less than advertised.

Blizzard's notes confirm the reward issue itself has been fixed. They do not spell out in the hotfix post whether every previously affected player will receive a Spark retroactively, so anyone who already opened the faulty cache should avoid assuming compensation until Blizzard explicitly confirms how those accounts are being handled.

Prime Evil Council Farming Has Been Reined In

Hotfix 4 is not entirely generous. Blizzard has also changed the Prime Evil Council after discovering that the encounter could provide excessive experience and loot. The solution is a longer cooldown before the Council can grant rewards again.

This is an important distinction. Blizzard has not removed the encounter or reduced it to decorative anniversary content. The change targets repeated reward farming rather than the Council itself. Players can still fight the Prime Evils, but the encounter should no longer function as an endlessly refillable vending machine for experience and equipment.

Season 15's secret-heavy design almost guarantees that players will test every repeatable activity until something breaks. Give Diablo players three Prime Evils, a resettable encounter and a pile of loot, and somebody will eventually calculate the optimal number of Baals per minute. The only surprising part is usually how quickly the spreadsheet appears.

Switch 2 Players Finally Get Their Variant Skills

There is also an important Nintendo Switch 2 fix. Players on Blizzard's newly released handheld version could not properly use the variant skills introduced with Lord of Hatred. Hotfix 4 restores access to those abilities.

That is particularly welcome because the Switch 2 release is barely a week old. We recently covered how Diablo IV targets 40 FPS in Performance Mode on Switch 2, alongside cross-play and cross-progression. The attraction is obvious: take the same characters away from the PC or television and continue playing elsewhere. Missing expansion abilities rather undermine that portability when the character arrives with part of its build locked behind a bug.

Hotfix 4 should now make Lord of Hatred's variant skills usable as intended on the platform.

Horadric Cube Materials Are Dropping Again

Another fix touches one of Season 15's central systems. Certain Kurast Undercity Tributes were failing to award their associated Horadric Cube crafting materials. That has now been corrected.

The Cube has become unusually important this season. It is not merely a crafting station. Players have used it to recreate hidden Diablo II Runewords, combine the three Prime Evil Splinters into Wirt's Lucky Coin and manufacture the Torn Net used to hunt Mefishto. At this point, anything interfering with Cube materials has the potential to block several different progression paths at once.

Hotfix 4 also fixes various cases where class quests could not be completed, although Blizzard does not list every affected quest individually. That broad wording means we should avoid declaring every reported seasonal progression problem solved. The forums still contain fresh reports of other stuck quests and Season 15 issues after the hotfix landed.

Warlock and Old Mountain Damage Bugs Were Corrected

Two combat interactions were also brought back into line. The Warlock's Fiend of Abbadon's Lesser Demon Bonus had been allowing unintended levels of damage, so Blizzard corrected the interaction and re-enabled the upgrade. The five-piece bonus for Old Mountain Talisman combined with Grief was also producing unintended damage and has been fixed.

Those changes matter because Season 15's anniversary systems have introduced a great many new interactions simultaneously. Legacy equipment, Sets, Talismans, Runewords and new class mechanics all meeting each other at once is exactly the sort of environment where multiplication occasionally becomes enthusiastic.

Season 15 Is Healthier, but It Is Not Bug-Free

Hotfix 4 clears several of the most visible problems from the first week, but it would be premature to declare the season repaired. Players are still reporting issues involving Hellfire Torch interactions, seasonal objectives, loot filters, expansion access and other progression problems. The official forums remain busy enough that nobody should mistake one large hotfix for the end of Season 15's troubleshooting.

Still, this particular update matters because it repairs systems players were actively afraid to use. Wirt's Lucky Coin is the clearest example. A secret is much less enjoyable when discovering it merely unlocks the exciting possibility of deleting several hours of materials.

Season of Hell's Legacy has been at its best when players are experimenting, combining strange objects and trying ridiculous ideas simply to see what happens.

After Hotfix 4, throwing Wirt's Lucky Coin into the Tristram fountain should once again be one of those ridiculous ideas.

Rather than an expensive mistake.
