Halloween in Diablo Immortal has always been a slightly peculiar concept. Sanctuary is already populated by walking corpses, deranged cultists, demonic abominations and creatures that appear to have been assembled from the leftover contents of a particularly unpleasant butcher's shop. Decorating Westmarch with a few pumpkins hardly seems necessary. But Blizzard has apparently decided that the usual horrors are no longer sufficient, because the game's latest update introduces another Halloween activity, an entirely new reward campaign and several changes that will remain relevant long after the decorations have been taken down.
Patch 5.1.2 arrives with regional maintenance on October 20 and 21, 2026, bringing Hallows Phantom, a Halloween-themed version of Defense of Cyrangar, alongside the new Long March campaign, additional Legendary Essences, class adjustments and improvements to several progression systems. There are even more Challenge Rift floors for players who have somehow managed to run out of things to do.
And perhaps the most interesting part is that some of the smallest changes may prove considerably more useful than another three weeks of seasonal monster slaughter.
Hallows Phantom Turns Defense of Cyrangar Into a Halloween Nightmare
The headline addition is Hallows Phantom, which begins on October 21 following maintenance and runs until November 11 at 2:59 a.m. Rather than simply bringing back the familiar Hallow's Wake activities, Blizzard has introduced a special version of Defense of Cyrangar in which players battle increasingly unpleasant waves of monsters while earning seasonal rewards.
The event begins with a gift from the Crone, who has once again established herself as Sanctuary's preferred supplier of suspicious seasonal entertainment. Players can complete daily and weekly objectives to collect Hallowed Stones, which can then be exchanged for rewards including Gold, Arcane Dust, Telluric Pearls and Legendary Crests. There are also three limited head cosmetics to unlock: Headless Pyre, Headless Miasma and Headless Haunt. Apparently, removing your character's head remains one of the most reliable ways to celebrate Halloween in Diablo Immortal.
For players interested in something beyond the cosmetic rewards, Hallows Phantom also introduces server-wide leaderboards with additional prizes distributed when the event concludes. Blizzard has not presented this as an entirely new permanent game mode, however. It is a limited-time Halloween variation, and players should remember that unused Hallowed Stones will disappear when the event ends.
That last detail is particularly important. Diablo Immortal has developed a remarkable talent for introducing currencies that eventually become worthless, so spending your Hallowed Stones before November 11 is considerably wiser than saving them for a retirement fund.
The Long March Adds Another Reward Campaign
Running alongside Hallows Phantom is the new Long March campaign, which follows the same October 21 to November 11 schedule. Here the objective is to complete activities and earn Skeletal Spoils, a separate reward currency that can be exchanged for various progression items. Rewards include Telluric Pearls, 1-Star Legendary Gems, selectable Set Items and Legendary Item Chests.
The campaign's weekly objectives refresh every Wednesday at 3:00 a.m. server time, giving players several opportunities to work toward the rewards before the event finishes. Blizzard has also improved how selectable Legendary equipment rewards function. Instead of receiving a random Legendary item from the equipment slot you select, players will now receive a specific Legendary item for that slot, offering greater control over the equipment they obtain.
That may sound like a minor detail, but anybody who has spent an unreasonable number of evenings farming the wrong item will understand its importance. Randomness is an essential part of Diablo, of course, but there is a difference between enjoying unpredictable loot and discovering that the game has once again rewarded your efforts with something you already own six copies of.
The change also arrives at an interesting moment for equipment hunters. We recently covered how Blessed Hunter allows players to improve newly dropped dungeon Set Items through multiple blessing rolls, while September's update introduced Versatile Sockets on every newly acquired Set Ring. Together, these systems suggest Blizzard is gradually becoming more willing to let players influence their equipment rather than leaving absolutely everything to chance.
Five More Secondary Item Ranks Are Coming
Beyond Halloween, one of the update's most significant changes concerns long-term character progression. Blizzard is increasing the maximum Secondary Item Rank from 25 to 30, providing another five upgrade levels for players who have already reached the previous limit.
These additional ranks will not be available immediately to everybody. Each requires a specific Paragon milestone:
- Rank 26: Paragon 1600
- Rank 27: Paragon 1700
- Rank 28: Paragon 1800
- Rank 29: Paragon 2000
- Rank 30: Paragon 2100
Blizzard says the new limits are intended to support continued character growth without allowing upgrades to become disconnected from overall progression. For experienced players sitting on piles of upgrade materials, the change provides another reason to revisit Challenge Rifts and continue developing their equipment.
It also illustrates the increasingly complicated nature of Diablo Immortal's endgame. The game already has several overlapping progression systems involving Legendary Gems, Normal Gems, equipment upgrades, Set Items and Paragon levels. We previously examined how Normal Gems gained progressive upgrades beginning at Rank 6, making their enormous resource requirements slightly less punishing. Secondary Item Rank 30 continues that same philosophy of extending progression without replacing the existing system.
For dedicated players, another five ranks represent additional objectives. For everybody else, they are a reminder that Sanctuary's equipment maintenance department apparently operates around the clock.
New Legendary Essences and Class Balance Changes
Patch 5.1.2 also introduces new Legendary equipment and Essences, including additions associated with Inferno XV. Blizzard has confirmed balance changes affecting the Monk, Demon Hunter, Druid, Blood Knight and Warlock, while the wider collection of new Legendary Essences covers additional classes as well.
There is also an important adjustment to Legendary Essence Loyalty Points. With Inferno XV Essences arriving, existing Loyalty Points will be converted into Legacy Loyalty Points. Players who have unlocked Inferno XV can then obtain new Loyalty Points by extracting equipment from that difficulty and use them toward its Legendary Essences.
For players experimenting with new builds, these changes could ultimately prove more important than the Halloween event itself. A new Essence can transform an overlooked skill into something genuinely useful, while a balance adjustment can change which combinations work best in group activities or competitive play. Blizzard has published the full list of Legendary Essence additions and class changes on its official forums, although the developers caution that displayed values may change before release.
Challenge Rift Season 21 and Some Welcome Quality-of-Life Changes
Challenge Rift Season 21 begins November 2 and continues until December 17, adding floors 901 through 950 while increasing the difficulty of earlier floors. The first player on each server to complete Floor 950 will receive a limited-time portrait frame lasting until Season 22 begins. It is a particularly exclusive reward for players who enjoy seeing just how much punishment their characters can survive before the mathematics becomes unreasonable.
Elsewhere, Blizzard is introducing an inventory pinning system that allows players to prioritize up to 22 frequently used items. Pinned equipment and materials receive a distinctive gilded outline, making them easier to locate among the growing collection of objects that Diablo Immortal expects adventurers to carry everywhere.
The patch also strengthens several Gifts of Corvus abilities, improving effects such as Superior Bandage, Pulsing Shield and Fleet Strike. A handful of bug fixes address problems involving Wind Walk charges and Tempest Legendary Essence interactions.
None of these changes is particularly glamorous, but they address the sort of everyday frustrations that tend to accumulate in games with complicated equipment and progression systems. We have already seen Blizzard make substantial adjustments to the game's economy, including the introduction of cross-server trading for 5-Star Legendary Gems. Inventory improvements and more predictable equipment rewards belong to that same broader effort to make Diablo Immortal's systems a little less exhausting to navigate.
Halloween Is Temporary, but the Bigger Changes Will Remain
Diablo Immortal's latest update is an interesting mixture of the familiar and the genuinely useful. Hallows Phantom adds another temporary activity, complete with seasonal currency, cosmetics and leaderboards. Long March provides another collection of rewards to pursue, while returning events such as Trial of the Hordes and Fractured Plane ensure that the calendar remains suitably overcrowded.
But the more important developments may be the ones that receive less attention. Five additional Secondary Item Ranks, more control over Legendary equipment rewards, new Essences and better inventory management will continue influencing how players approach the game after Halloween has finished.
That is probably the healthiest direction Diablo Immortal can take. Seasonal events are useful for bringing players back, but improvements to the underlying systems give them reasons to stay. And in a game where almost every activity involves collecting equipment, improving equipment or discovering that your equipment needs further improvement, even a small reduction in unnecessary frustration is valuable.
Hallows Phantom begins October 21 and ends November 11. The Long March campaign follows the same schedule, while Challenge Rift Season 21 begins November 2.
There will be monsters to kill, cosmetics to collect and several new ways to make your character marginally more powerful.
Which is another way of saying that Halloween has arrived in Sanctuary.
Not that anybody was likely to notice the difference.
