Not improved it.
Solved it.
Players looking through the new Soul Splinters and Legacy Uniques noticed a rather alarming interaction between Splinter of Pain and Leoric’s Crown.
The Splinter can provide 40% Damage Reduction.
Leoric’s Crown can increase the effect of socketed gems by 75–100%.
And on the PTR, players began seeing tooltips suggesting that the combination could reach an absurd 92% Damage Reduction with the right version of the Crown.
There was just one small problem.
It apparently does not actually work that way.
The 92% Number Really Does Appear
This was not simply somebody multiplying numbers in a spreadsheet and becoming excited.
PTR players have reported that Leoric’s Crown visually increases the Soul Splinter values shown on the item.
That includes Splinter of Pain.
At Unique quality, Blizzard lists Splinter of Pain as granting 40% Damage Reduction in exchange for losing 30% Movement Speed.
Combine that with a sufficiently powerful Leoric’s Crown, and the displayed value can become enormously higher.
One community breakdown calculated the theoretical result at 92% Damage Reduction.
Which is the sort of number that makes defensive gearing considerably easier.
Mostly because you could stop doing it.
Then Players Went Into the Testing Hall
Actual PTR testing has produced a very different result.
A detailed bug report on Blizzard’s forums found that Soul Splinters socketed into Leoric’s Crown do not appear to behave consistently with the tooltip.
The Crown displays the amplified values.
But players testing the effects report that the character stats do not reflect the same increase.
More strangely, one tester found that placing a Soul Splinter directly into Leoric’s Crown caused its Unique power to stop functioning entirely, leaving only the Resistance component active.
Put another copy of the same Splinter into a ring or amulet, however, and the power begins working again.
That is considerably less exciting than 92% Damage Reduction.
But considerably more useful for a PTR bug report.
Leoric’s Crown Is a Very Strange Item in Season 15
The confusion comes from the new Diablo 4 version of Leoric’s Crown.
Blizzard is bringing the classic Diablo III item back as one of Season 15’s permanent Legacy Uniques.
Its Diablo 4 version has an important additional rule:
It counts as Jewelry.
That matters because Soul Splinters are normally socketed into jewelry.
So the Crown appears deliberately designed to interact with Season 15’s new socketables.
Blizzard’s own notes say it increases the effect of any gem socketed into the helm by 75–100%.
On paper, the interaction makes perfect sense.
On the PTR, it currently appears to be having a minor existential crisis.
And Splinter of Pain Is Not the Only Potential Problem
This is why the bug matters beyond one defensive combination.
Season 15 includes several powerful Soul Splinters.
Splinter of Anguish can provide Critical Strike Chance and Attack Speed.
Splinter of Hellfire offers a huge multiplicative damage bonus while eliminating Critical Strike Chance.
Splinter of Sin increases Maximum Life.
If Leoric’s Crown eventually amplifies the full Unique powers of these Splinters as its tooltip suggests, it could become one of the most important items in the entire Season 15 meta.
If it only boosts their Resistance values, the Crown becomes something very different.
That is a fairly significant distinction.
This Is Exactly What the PTR Is Supposed to Find
It is tempting to look at “92% Damage Reduction” and immediately declare Season 15 broken.
But that would be missing the point.
The 3.2.0 PTR exists specifically so players can find interactions like this before Season 15 launches.
Blizzard has already said that feedback from the PTR will be used to adjust balance, fix bugs and refine the new systems.
Leoric’s Crown is also already listed among Blizzard’s known PTR issues because it currently cannot be enchanted at the Occultist.
The strange Soul Splinter interaction therefore joins a growing list of things that clearly still need work.
Immortality Can Wait
So no, Diablo 4 players have not definitively discovered a working 92% Damage Reduction button.
They have discovered something much more PTR-like:
A tooltip says one thing.
The character sheet says another.
The actual mechanic appears to do something else entirely.
That is less useful for clearing Torment.
But extremely useful for Blizzard.
Season 15 does not need everyone walking around with 92% Damage Reduction.
And preferably it also does not need an item where nobody can quite determine which part of the tooltip exists in reality.
There are still a few days left to fix that.
