Breaking builds.
Finding bugs.
Arguing about balance.
And deciding, with remarkable confidence, whether an entire season is good or terrible before it actually exists.
There is one rather important complication this time.
Blizzard has deliberately not put all of Season 15 on the PTR.
Not because it is unfinished.
Because Blizzard wants to keep some of it secret until BlizzCon.
This PTR Is Different on Purpose
Blizzard says the Diablo 4 3.2.0 PTR has a different selection of features than players may be used to seeing.
And the developers are unusually explicit about why.
There is more Season 15 content still to be revealed, and Blizzard did not want everything coming with the season available for players to discover before the team had a chance to talk about it at BlizzCon.
So what we are testing right now is not Season 15.
It is a selection from Season 15.
That distinction matters.
We Have Already Seen a Lot
It is not exactly a tiny PTR.
Players have been testing Soul Splinters, Challenge Dungeons, Overland Ambushes, Legacy Uniques, Mythic crafting changes, Mythic Charms, Rebirth and the new Horadric Post.
That has already given us plenty to talk about.
We have seen Mythic Unique Charms become an official part of the loot chase.
We have looked at Rebirth finally letting old characters return for another season.
And we have even watched players investigate some wonderfully suspicious interactions between Soul Splinters and Leoric’s Crown.
But the PTR menu is not the complete restaurant.
Challenge Dungeons Prove the Point
Challenge Dungeons are perhaps the clearest example.
The system currently lets players enter special portals and challenge bosses at difficulties potentially several Torment tiers above their current setting.
But Blizzard specifically warns that the encounters on the PTR were built to test the underlying system.
The actual Season 15 version will feature different content.
So even when we can test a new feature, we may not be seeing the version of that feature that will define the season.
Messerschmidt’s Reaver provides another smaller example.
The classic Legacy Unique is coming in Season 15.
It simply is not available to test on this PTR.
That Makes PTR Verdicts More Complicated
This does not mean players should stop criticising what is currently available.
Quite the opposite.
The entire purpose of a PTR is to discover things like broken interactions, weak skills, badly tuned systems and tooltips that appear to have developed independent political opinions.
Blizzard says feedback from the test will be used to adjust balance, eliminate bugs and refine systems before launch.
That feedback matters.
But there is a difference between saying:
“Transfiguring feels bad on the PTR.”
And saying:
“Season 15 has nothing in it.”
We currently do not know everything that is in it.
BlizzCon Now Has a Diablo 4 Mystery
The more interesting question is what Blizzard is hiding.
It has to be substantial enough that the developers specifically prevented players from seeing it before BlizzCon.
That does not automatically mean a new class, giant endgame system or demon-powered washing machine.
Blizzard has not said what the missing content is.
And speculation has an unfortunate habit of becoming “confirmed” after being repeated enough times on Reddit.
For now, the only safe conclusion is that the current PTR does not contain the entire Season 15 offering.
Something is being held back.
The PTR Ends Before We Get the Full Picture
The 3.2.0 PTR runs from August 4 through August 11.
That means this testing window is primarily about the systems Blizzard has chosen to expose: balance changes, Soul Splinters, Legacy Uniques, crafting, Rebirth and the other features currently available.
The rest will come later.
That makes Season 15 unusually difficult to judge right now.
We can test the machinery.
We can complain when a cog flies across the room.
We can absolutely tell Blizzard when Sorcerer players are unhappy or when an item appears to promise 92% Damage Reduction and then develops stage fright.
But the curtain is still down over part of the season.
And apparently Blizzard intends to raise it at BlizzCon.
