Diablo 4’s Arioc’s Needle Is Dealing Too Much Poison Damage

Arioc’s Needle has returned to Diablo 4 with considerably more poison than Blizzard ordered.

On the Patch 3.2.0 Public Test Realm, the Legacy Unique polearm’s Poison Damage over Time affix is dealing more damage than intended.

Blizzard has acknowledged the problem on its official PTR known-issues list.

The weapon is supposed to revive a classic Diablo 2 item.

At the moment, it has also revived the ancient tradition of suspicious damage numbers.

Arioc’s Needle Is A Returning Legacy Unique

Season 15 introduces a collection of Legacy Uniques inspired by famous items from earlier Diablo games.

Arioc’s Needle originally appeared in Diablo 2 as a fast Hyperion Spear with increased attack speed, Deadly Strike, bonus skill ranks and added poison damage.

Its Diablo 4 version is a two-handed polearm available to Barbarian, Druid and Spiritborn.

Blizzard has adapted the original item to Diablo 4’s current itemisation rather than recreating every old statistic exactly.

The name and poison theme remain familiar.

The current damage output is slightly more enthusiastic.

The Poison Affix Is Stronger Than Intended

The confirmed problem concerns Arioc’s Needle’s Poison Damage over Time affix.

On the PTR, that affix is producing more damage than Blizzard intends for the finished weapon.

This can make the polearm appear substantially stronger in poison-focused builds than it should be.

Players may see large damage ticks, faster boss kills or improved clearing and conclude that Arioc’s Needle is already one of Season 15’s best weapons.

That conclusion would be premature.

This Is A Bug, Not A Hidden Buff

Because Blizzard has added the issue to its known-problems list, the inflated poison damage is not an undocumented balance change.

It is a PTR bug that should be corrected before Season 15 launches.

Build guides, tier lists and damage comparisons need to account for that.

Arioc’s Needle may still be powerful after the fix.

It simply should not be judged by damage numbers produced while one of its affixes is officially misbehaving.

Poison Builds Can Produce Misleading Results

The bug is especially important for Druid and Spiritborn builds that already scale Poison Damage, Damage over Time or effects applied to poisoned enemies.

A broken base affix can become even more exaggerated after being multiplied by:

  • Poison Damage bonuses.
  • Damage over Time multipliers.
  • Primary-stat scaling.
  • Paragon bonuses.
  • Legendary Aspects.
  • Soul Splinters.
  • Talisman effects.

The final number may look like proof of a powerful interaction.

It may actually be several legitimate multipliers standing on top of one incorrect starting value.

The Bug Could Distort Class Comparisons

Arioc’s Needle is available to three classes, but they will not necessarily benefit from the bug equally.

A class with stronger Poison support may turn the inflated affix into a much larger advantage than a class using the weapon primarily for direct damage.

This can make one class appear overtuned when the real issue is attached to the item.

Players comparing Barbarian, Druid and Spiritborn performance should therefore test those classes both with and without Arioc’s Needle.

Otherwise, the polearm may quietly enter the class-balance discussion wearing a false moustache.

Do Not Invest Too Heavily In The PTR Version

PTR characters and items will not transfer to the live game, so permanent material loss is not a concern.

Time still is.

Players should avoid spending the entire test period perfecting a build that only works because Arioc’s poison affix is overtuned.

It is still useful to test the item, reproduce the issue and identify how different bonuses affect it.

The goal should be reporting the bug rather than planning a finished Season 15 build around it.

How Players Can Test Arioc’s Needle Properly

Useful testing should separate the weapon’s direct damage from its Poison Damage over Time.

Players can compare:

  • Arioc’s Needle with no additional Poison bonuses.
  • The weapon with Poison Damage affixes added.
  • The weapon with Damage over Time multipliers.
  • Equivalent attacks using another polearm.
  • Damage against ordinary enemies and bosses.
  • Tooltip values against actual combat ticks.

Recording exact values, character stats and equipped effects will make bug reports more useful.

“The poison seems absurd” is accurate.

“The poison dealt this amount under these conditions” is considerably easier to fix.

The Tooltip May Not Reveal The Entire Problem

Depending on where the calculation error occurs, the item tooltip may display the expected value while combat applies a larger amount.

The tooltip itself may also be incorrect.

Players should compare displayed damage with actual damage ticks rather than trusting either one alone.

Damage over Time effects can also overlap with poison from skills, companions or other equipment.

Testing against a clean target with as few additional effects as possible will produce clearer results.

Arioc’s Needle Still Has Potential

The existence of a bug does not mean the item will become useless after it is corrected.

A returning Legacy Unique should offer more than one overtuned affix.

Arioc’s Needle may still support poison builds, provide valuable general bonuses or create interesting interactions for Barbarian, Druid and Spiritborn.

The final question is whether its intended power remains competitive after the excess poison is removed.

That cannot be answered accurately until Blizzard fixes the calculation.

Legacy Uniques Need Clean PTR Data

Season 15’s Legacy Uniques are designed to bring recognisable items from Diablo’s past into the modern game.

Their balance will be judged against current Mythics, class Uniques and crafted equipment.

If one arrives with a broken damage affix, early player feedback can become focused on a version of the item that will never reach the live servers.

That makes quick acknowledgement important.

Blizzard has already identified the Arioc’s Needle problem.

Now players can test the rest of the weapon without mistaking the poison leak for official design.

Wait For The Fix Before Declaring It Best In Slot

Arioc’s Needle may eventually become a strong Season 15 weapon.

It may become a niche poison option.

It may return to the stash after several respectful minutes of nostalgia.

The current PTR cannot answer that while its Poison Damage over Time affix is dealing too much damage.

For now, the polearm is not proving that poison builds are overpowered.

It is proving that the known-issues list remains required reading.

The Needle has returned from Diablo 2.

It brought more poison than customs allowed.
