People arrive.
Several brightly coloured things happen at once.
Someone disappears.
Occasionally that someone is you.
But a growing community discussion argues that one of Diablo Immortal's newer Legendary Paragon Skills has pushed the game's already fast PvP even further toward instant death.
The culprit is Overpowering Blows.
And yes, Blizzard may have chosen the name slightly too well.
What Overpowering Blows Actually Does
Overpowering Blows was introduced as one of four Legendary Paragon Skills available from Paragon 1500.
Its effect sounds simple.
If you deal damage exceeding 15% of an enemy's maximum Life, the skill deals a second blow.
If the target is already below 50% Life, that second hit also stuns them for several seconds.
The effect has a 20-second cooldown against the same target.
That makes it particularly attractive to builds capable of delivering enormous chunks of burst damage in a single attack.
And that is precisely where the PvP complaints begin.
A Big Hit Can Suddenly Become Two Big Hits
Players discussing the skill point out an obvious consequence.
If an attack already removes a significant percentage of another player's Life, Overpowering Blows does not merely reward the attacker with a small bonus.
It repeats the damage.
A hit taking 20% of someone's Life can therefore become something much closer to 40% before other effects are considered.
A considerably larger critical hit becomes much nastier.
This has led some Battleground players to highlight Demon Hunter and Warlock burst builds in particular, although Overpowering Blows itself is not restricted to either class.
Every class can unlock the Paragon Skill.
The advantage simply becomes more obvious when your build is already designed around making one enormous number appear above somebody's head.
Restitution in Blood Makes the Situation Even Stranger
Another piece frequently mentioned in the discussion is the Restitution in Blood set.
Its four-piece bonus causes Fated Prey to deal additional damage when the effect expires, with that damage increasing dramatically as the victim loses Life.
At 25% Life or below, the bonus can reach 460%.
That creates an unpleasant little sequence.
A large burst attack removes a major chunk of Life.
Overpowering Blows repeats the hit.
The target enters the range where Restitution in Blood becomes increasingly dangerous.
And suddenly the theoretical distinction between “very large burst combo” and “one-shot” becomes rather academic to the person staring at the respawn timer.
The Bigger Problem May Be Time-to-Kill
Not everyone agrees that Overpowering Blows itself needs to disappear.
Some players point out that it is available to everyone and that building around burst damage is a perfectly legitimate choice.
That is fair.
But the more interesting criticism is about Diablo Immortal's overall time-to-kill.
Battlegrounds already contain enormous Critical Hits, Legendary Gems, Set bonuses, crowd control, immunities, shields and class abilities firing simultaneously.
When another mechanic dramatically amplifies burst damage, there is less time for players to react.
PvP becomes less about surviving an engagement and more about whether you were unfortunate enough to occupy the wrong three square metres of Sanctuary when somebody's cooldown finished.
Fast PvP Still Needs Counterplay
There is nothing inherently wrong with explosive PvP.
Diablo is not supposed to suddenly become a fencing simulator where two Barbarians politely circle each other for eleven minutes.
Powerful characters should feel powerful.
Critical Hits should be frightening.
Good builds should punish mistakes.
But fast combat still needs enough space between “I am in danger” and “I am dead” for player decisions to matter.
That is the concern behind the current Overpowering Blows discussion.
The skill may not be the sole cause of Diablo Immortal's PvP damage problem.
It may simply be very good at exposing it.
Maybe the Name Was a Warning
Blizzard has not announced a nerf to Overpowering Blows, and community complaints alone do not prove that a mechanic is mathematically broken.
But the conversation is worth watching.
When players stop arguing about which class is overpowered and start arguing about whether anyone has enough time to respond before dying, the problem becomes larger than a tier list.
Overpowering Blows was designed to reward heavy hits.
In Battlegrounds, some players think it is rewarding them a little too enthusiastically.
Sometimes naming a skill accurately can really come back to haunt you.
