Either way, five Prime Ribs are still gone.
That matters because Prime Ribs require players to repeatedly visit the Secret Cow Level and defeat the Cow King. They are not ordinary boss materials spilling from every activity in Sanctuary. Each failed Moophisto payout therefore represents another trip back through one of Season 15's more elaborate secret chains.
Players Are Getting XP but No Items
The reports began appearing on Blizzard's forums shortly after players fully uncovered the Bovine Sanctum. Several players on high Torment difficulties described killing Moophisto successfully and receiving experience and reputation while no items appeared on the ground.
Others tried switching difficulty, disabling cross-play, changing instances and turning off loot filters. None of those steps consistently solved the problem.
One player reported running Moophisto successfully throughout the day before his drops suddenly stopped. Another said the first several summons worked normally before the final five produced nothing. The particularly interesting reports are from players who waited a few hours, returned and found that Moophisto had started dropping loot again, only for the rewards to stop after another couple of kills.
That pattern is why the community has started talking about a possible cooldown.
It is not proof.
But Season 15 has given everyone a very recent reason to be suspicious of invisible boss timers.
Uber Tristram Already Has a Hidden Loot Cooldown
Earlier this week we covered Uber Tristram's undocumented loot cooldown. Blizzard increased the time before the Prime Evil Council can reward players again to stop excessive farming, but the game still allows another Wirt's Lucky Coin to be consumed while the rewards are unavailable.
The result is remarkably similar to what players are now describing with Moophisto.
Spend rare summoning material.
Fight boss.
Kill boss.
Look at empty floor.
There is currently no evidence proving that Moophisto uses the same system. Blizzard has not documented a Bovine Sanctum loot cooldown, and no reliable community test has established a specific timer. The reports could instead represent a bug where the boss incorrectly stops generating loot after repeated kills.
But after Uber Tristram, “maybe there is an invisible timer” is no longer a particularly paranoid theory.
Five Prime Ribs Are Required for Every Summon
Moophisto is hidden behind one of Season 15's most elaborate cow rituals. Players first need access to the Secret Cow Level, where the Cow King can provide Prime Ribs. Five are then used at the altar inside the Bovine Sanctum to summon Moophisto.
The mainland Altar of the Heifer used to reach the sanctuary does not consume those ribs. The second altar, located inside the sanctuary itself, absolutely does.
Put five Prime Ribs into it and they are gone.
That is why repeated no-loot kills hurt considerably more than a normal world boss failing to provide anything exciting. Moophisto is effectively charging admission each time.
Our Bovine armor guide already covers the wider cow hunt, including the Sirloin, Hooves, Head and Brisket pieces. Moophisto himself is particularly important because he can provide Brisket of the Bovine as part of that secret cosmetic set.
Several players experiencing the current issue have reported something even stranger: ordinary loot disappeared while the cosmetic could still drop.
One Player Got Brisket and Nothing Else
A forum report from September 23 describes exactly that situation. After Moophisto stopped dropping normal items, the player returned several hours later and received loot again. After another couple of summons the ordinary drops disappeared once more.
On one of those kills, Moophisto still dropped Brisket of the Bovine.
Nothing else.
No normal equipment. No Charms. No Sigils. Just the cosmetic chest piece.
That detail could be important because it suggests cosmetic rewards may be handled separately from the boss's normal loot table. It also means players should not automatically assume a Brisket drop proves everything is functioning normally underneath.
Sometimes the cow may give you his shirt while keeping everything in his pockets.
The Loot Filter Does Not Explain Every Report
One obvious suggestion has been loot filters. Season 15's filtering system can hide items from the ground, and a boss appearing to drop nothing can occasionally mean the player has simply told Diablo IV that none of the items are interesting enough to display.
Several affected players have ruled that out.
Some report disabling the filter entirely. Others say they do not use a filter at all. There are also group reports where one player receives rewards while another gets nothing from the same Moophisto kill.
That does not tell us what the actual problem is, but it makes “everyone forgot about their loot filter” an increasingly incomplete explanation.
It Could Still Be an Anti-Farming Mechanic
There is a design reason Blizzard might limit repeated Moophisto rewards.
Once players have unlocked the Bovine Sanctum waypoint and accumulated enough Prime Ribs, the boss is extremely convenient to repeat. If his loot table is sufficiently strong, unlimited summons could become another situation similar to the Prime Evil Council, where players quickly find that one activity produces far more rewards than Blizzard intended.
A cooldown would solve that.
An invisible cooldown would create the problem we have now.
If Moophisto is deliberately limited, the altar needs to communicate that information before consuming five Prime Ribs. The obvious solution would be to disable the summon while loot is unavailable or display a message explaining when the player can earn rewards again.
We made exactly the same argument about Uber Tristram.
A hidden timer attached to free content is annoying.
A hidden timer that continues accepting expensive keys is considerably harder to defend.
Patch 3.2.2 Does Not Mention Moophisto
Blizzard has already published the next large Season 15 cleanup pass, Patch 3.2.2, with fixes for Runewords, seasonal progression, Cube crafting and several other problems.
Moophisto's disappearing loot is not listed.
That does not mean Blizzard is ignoring it. The issue could be handled through a separate server-side hotfix, or the developers may still be investigating whether the current behaviour is actually unintended.
But anyone planning a large Moophisto farming session should probably be aware that five successful summons do not necessarily mean the sixth will behave the same way.
For Now, Stop if the Loot Stops
Until Blizzard explains what is happening, the safest practical advice is wonderfully unsophisticated.
If Moophisto stops dropping loot, stop feeding him Prime Ribs.
Do not assume changing Torment difficulty will solve it. Do not assume another summon will magically reset the rewards. Community reports suggest waiting can restore drops, but there is not enough evidence to tell us how long to wait or whether time is actually the relevant factor.
We will update our Bovine coverage if Blizzard confirms a cooldown or fixes the problem as a bug.
Season 15 has already asked players to kill cows, collect their ribs, sail to a secret island and sacrifice the meat to summon a demonic bovine version of Mephisto.
That is already an unusual amount of trust to place in a cow.
If Moophisto stops dropping loot, there is no reason to give him another five ribs just to see whether he has changed his mind.
