How to use two Tree of Whispers War Plan setups to turn Grim Favors into XP, loot, Varshan ambushes and high-value caches
Season 15 has made the Tree of Whispers much more than the place you visit when ten Grim Favors accidentally pile up. With the right War Plan setup, it can become one of the cleanest Paragon farms in the season. The important trick is that you do not use the same War Plan while farming and while opening your caches. You farm with a reward-heavy setup, hoard the caches, then respec into an XP-heavy setup before opening the entire stockpile.
This guide is aimed at characters already in the endgame and pushing toward Paragon 300. It works best on the highest Torment level you can clear quickly. Season 15 already buffed high-Torment XP and endgame caches, so speed matters more than choosing a difficulty where every ordinary pack requires a committee meeting.
Why this farm works
Tree of Whispers has several War Plan nodes that pull in opposite directions. Some make the act of completing Whispers more rewarding. Others improve what happens when a cache is opened. Normally that sounds like a small buildcrafting choice. The farm turns it into a two-stage production line: farm with the first setup, open with the second. The respec costs Gold, so the method becomes much more efficient when you save a large batch of caches before switching.
Season 15 is especially friendly to this approach because War Plan progression is now shared between compatible characters. The points are shared even though each character still configures its own plan, which means a developed account can set up the Whisper tree immediately instead of rebuilding the entire progression from scratch.
Step 1: Set up the farming War Plan
Start in the Tree of Whispers War Plan. For the farming phase, the goal is to make each completed Whisper capable of producing extra encounters and better side rewards. The right-side chain is the important part: Grim Retribution, Colossal Foe and Malignant Invasion. On the central branch, take the route through Grim Mysteries.
The farming plan is built around the right-side Whisper Ambush chain while the central branch is used for stronger cache rewards.
Grim Retribution: turn completed Whispers into ambushes
Grim Retribution gives completed Whispers a chance to trigger a Whisper Ambush. Enemies in those ambushes can burst out the contents of a Collection of Chaos when killed. This is the first layer of the farm: the Whisper objective itself pays you, then the game may immediately create another encounter on top of it.
If you are using the appropriate Prime Evil progression, the node can become stronger at higher ranks, but the ambush mechanic itself is already useful without building the entire guide around that bonus. For a broader look at which Prime Evil path fits which activity, our Diablo, Baal or Mephisto Splinter guide explains how the three seasonal routes overlap with Whispers.
Grim Retribution can trigger a Whisper Ambush after completing a Whisper, adding another reward layer to the route.
Colossal Foe: let bosses join the ambush
Colossal Foe upgrades the same loop by allowing bosses to appear inside Whisper Ambushes. Bosses are exactly what a speed farm wants: short, concentrated fights with a larger payout than wandering through low-density trash. If your build deletes them quickly, they barely interrupt the route and can make the ambush significantly more valuable.
Colossal Foe allows bosses to appear in Whisper Ambushes and improves the value of those extra encounters.
Malignant Invasion: add Varshan to the pool
Malignant Invasion is the capstone that makes the right-side route particularly entertaining. Varshan can appear in Whisper Ambushes, and defeating him awards the contents of an Ancestral Collection of Chaos. This is not the reason the farm gives huge Paragon XP, but it is the reason the farming half can generate an absurd quantity of useful side loot while you are building the cache stockpile.
Malignant Invasion lets Varshan appear during Whisper Ambushes, turning a simple Favor run into a boss-and-loot opportunity.
Step 2: Farm the fastest Grim Favors, not the most impressive ones
Once the farming plan is active, open the map and stop thinking of Whispers as content you must clear completely. Think in Grim Favors per minute. The ideal objectives are the ones that award five Grim Favors quickly: short dungeons, fast boss objectives, Helltide overlaps, caves and other objectives that can be completed with minimal travel. Two efficient 5-Favor Whispers are enough for a Tree turn-in.
The video route repeatedly checks the world map for five-Favor targets and then uses short instanced content when it appears. That fits Season 15 particularly well because Nightmare Dungeons and Whispers can overlap with the Splinter of Hatred path. Our Season 15 Prime Evil Splinter guide is useful if you want the secondary activity to reinforce the same farming loop.
Five-Grim-Favor Whispers are the backbone of the route. Prioritize short objectives and nearby clusters instead of clearing the map methodically.
Nightmare Dungeons are good when the Whisper is already attached
Do not run a long Nightmare Dungeon simply because it exists. Run it when it is already a strong Whisper target and your build can finish the objective quickly. The example route uses a Whisper dungeon, completes the required objective, collects the Grim Favors and immediately moves on. That is the right mindset: the dungeon is a delivery mechanism for the Favor, not a sightseeing tour.
A Whisper-tagged Nightmare Dungeon can be worth running when the objective is fast and the Torment level is comfortable for your build.
Step 3: Let the ambushes happen and take the extra loot
When Grim Retribution triggers, do not leave immediately. The ambush is free value layered onto the Whisper you just finished. With Malignant Invasion active, that may include Varshan. The important efficiency rule is still the same: kill what spawned, take the reward, and get back to the next Favor objective. Do not turn a 30-second bonus encounter into a five-minute inventory-management session.
Varshan can appear as part of the Whisper Ambush chain. Kill him quickly, collect the reward and continue the Favor loop.
The farming setup can produce substantial side loot, including runes, tuning materials, seasonal items and boss-related rewards.
Step 4: Do not open the Whisper Caches yet
This is the step that separates the method from ordinary Whisper farming. When the Tree pays you, stash the cache unopened. Keep farming until you have enough boxes to justify a War Plan respec. A single cache is not worth rearranging the tree for. A full stash tab is. One or two tabs is even better if your Gold reserve can comfortably absorb the respec cost.
The current respec shown in the route costs around 50 million Gold. That sounds dramatic until the farm is already generating huge amounts of loot and materials, but it is still a reason to batch the process. Pay once, open a mountain of caches, then change back when you are ready for another farming session.
Step 5: Respec to Wisdom of Whispers before opening anything
When the stash is full enough, switch the central Tree of Whispers path away from the farming configuration and activate Wisdom of Whispers. The tooltip is the entire reason this trick works: it gives 50% more Experience Orbs in Whisper Caches. If you are using Splinter of Hatred at Rank 5, completed Whispers can also grant Experience Orbs directly, making the whole loop even more XP-focused.
Wisdom of Whispers is the XP switch: Whisper Caches produce 50% more Experience Orbs while the perk is active.
This is also why high-Torment farming matters. Season 15 increased the value of Experience Orbs and cache rewards at the top end, so use the highest difficulty that you can clear quickly rather than the highest number your character can technically survive. Our Torment XP and cache breakdown explains how much stronger those top-end rewards became.
Step 6: Take Resplendent Favor if you have the points
Continue down the central cache path to Resplendent Favor if your War Plan progression allows it. Every Whisper Cache then has a chance to drop a Resplendent Spark. At higher Splinter of Hatred ranks, the seasonal interaction can improve that payout further. Sparks are not guaranteed and should not be treated as the core XP mechanic, but when you are already opening dozens of caches, there is little reason not to add the chance.
Resplendent Favor adds a chance for a Resplendent Spark to each Whisper Cache, making large cache-opening sessions even more valuable.
Step 7: Open the stockpile and collect every XP Orb
Now open the caches. Do it with Wisdom of Whispers active and pick up every Experience Orb before moving on. The entire point of the setup is to convert hours of rapid Whisper completions into a concentrated XP burst. The more caches you batch, the more worthwhile the respec becomes.
At the time of writing, Gift of the Tree is active through October 7, which makes this method even stronger because Whisper turn-ins can produce additional caches. We previously looked at why Gift of the Tree is valuable for broad progression. In Season 15, the stronger XP Orbs and War Plan bonuses make that event considerably more interesting for a Paragon push. Once the event ends, the two-plan method still works; the total XP per turn-in simply drops.
A completed Whisper feeds the Tree and can trigger additional seasonal effects. The route is about chaining these completions with as little downtime as possible.
How fast can this reach Paragon 300?
There is no honest single number because the result changes with Paragon level, Torment difficulty, build speed, travel time, the active Gift of the Tree event and how aggressively you choose only efficient Whispers. What the method does reliably is remove a lot of dead time. You are earning XP while completing Whispers, generating caches for a later XP burst, creating ambushes for extra loot and occasionally adding Varshan on top.
Do not read “fast Paragon 300” as “click two boxes and become Paragon 300.” The final stretch is still a grind. The advantage is that almost every part of the loop is paying you twice. If your current strategy is randomly clearing endgame activities and occasionally remembering the Tree exists, this is much more focused.
Best practical setup before you start
Use the highest Torment tier you can clear at speed. A lower tier cleared twice as fast usually beats an aspirational tier full of deaths and slow bosses.
Have enough Gold to respec the Tree of Whispers War Plan without worrying about the 50 million cost shown in the route.
Prioritize 5-Grim-Favor objectives, especially short dungeons, bosses and activities already near your current route.
Keep inventory management short during the farming phase. Stash caches, salvage obvious junk and continue.
Use Splinter of Hatred if your overall activity mix leans toward Nightmare Dungeons, The Pit and XP-focused Whispers.
Open the caches only after switching to Wisdom of Whispers. Opening them early is the most expensive mistake in the entire method.
If you prefer a broader “farm everything at once” approach rather than a dedicated Paragon push, our Season 15 Helltide multi-farm guide stacks Pandemonium Ruptures, Corrupted Roots and multiple reward systems in one zone. The Whisper Cache method here is narrower and more administrative, but for raw Paragon progression that is exactly the point.

Final thoughts
The clever part of this farm is not a bug, an infinite reset or a boss that accidentally gives twelve billion XP. It is simply using Diablo IV's own War Plan system at two different moments. One setup makes Whispers richer while you farm them. The other makes the caches more valuable when you finally open them.
Season 15 has already turned Whispers into one of the more valuable universal endgame activities, and this route pushes that logic about as far as it can go. Farm quickly, batch everything, switch the plan, then cash out the XP.
The Tree still wants ten Grim Favors. The difference is that now it can help pay for Paragon 300.
